STUDY OF TRAFFIC FLOW ON A RESTRICTED FACILITY. REPORT II-1. OPTIMIZING TRAFFIC FLOW ON A RESTRICTED FACILITY

This paper presents an optimal control modeling philosophy based on the probabilistic nature of the flow-concentration relationship. The main objective of the modeling process was to develop techniques for synthesis of traffic control policies which provide more efficient utilization of urban highway transportation systems in general, and restricted facilities in particular. In the Markovian approach to the problem it is implicit that, given the present state of the process, the future state outcome is not unique but has a probability distribution over the state space of the process. Therefore, the realism of the process is preserved by the Markovian modeling philosophy.
