INTERMODAL FREIGHT TRANSPORT: KEY STATISTICAL DATA 1992-1997

This document is the first compilation of non-harmonised statistical data about freight transport in the European Union (EU) in one publication. It will be progressively improved in the future when more data about intermodal transport become available. The promotion and development of intermodal transport are important parts of the EU's Common Transport Policy. The construction of intermodal transport statistics is difficult, because every single consignment is conveyed by a specific transport chain and there are few data about transport chains. Most of these data are only about single links or single modes. The document is intended for policy makers and statisticians at EU and national level, and for the thousands of operators involved in intermodal transport and logistics in the EU. Several sources of information are used. The document first lists some key data related to intermodal transport. It then discusses the general situation and trends of transport in the EU. Several tables and maps of the EU's transport infrastructure are included, including the road network, the rail network , rail corridors, inland waterways, and container ports. The other tables included cover: (1) transport chains; (2) unitised transport by country, operator, and nodes and links; and (3) freight traffic through the Alps.
