AN L-BAND SHIP ANTENNA WITH VARIABLE CONICAL RADIATION CHARACTERISTIC FOR MARITIME SATELLITE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

The basic concept, development, and construction of an L-band ship's antenna (1,535 to 1,645 MHz) with stabilized platform for use in a maritime satellite communication system is described in detail. The antenna pattern of the medium gain antenna (minimum gain 7 dB) is a conical beam. The radiation at all azimuth angles is omnidirectional. The elevation angle of the conical beam is infinitely variable. The polarization of the radiation is right hand circular in the direction of the antenna axis and becomes increasingly elliptical for decreasing elevation angles. Due to its simple control system, low weight, and costs, this antenna system is particularly suitable for small ships. (Author)
