THE INSPECTION ZONE

Many work zone hazards can be reduced through improved maintenance of the specialized hardware used in work zones. In 1995, a training course entitled Work Zone Safety Inspection was developed for the Federal Highway Administration. The one-day course focuses on the critical elements of work-zone safety devices and hardware inspection and is most valuable to inspectors, project engineers, and technicians. The course is designed to improve the understanding of important features and functional requirements of typical traffic control devices and safety appurtenances used in work zones; improve ability to identify appropriate documents that address the layouts, operation, maintenance, and repair of devices; improve skills of inspection of traffic control devices and safety features and identify discrepancies and deficiencies; and teach how to establish records related to inspections and action taken to resolve and correct deficiencies.
