NEW PROJECTS HIT RECORD PACE: DOLLAR VOLUME RISES BY 21 PERCENT, YEAR OVER YEAR
Spending for new parking construction is spiraling upward to near-record heights. New office construction and airport expansions are helping to generate demand for new parking. Parking construction for the 12 months through March 1998 reached $3.55 billion, up 21% from the previous 12 months. The structural concrete industry is scrambling to keep up, and in some cases cannot. Of late, the ownership of many large parking structures has consolidated under the umbrellas of just a few large real estate investment trusts. As a probable consequence, economies of scale may provide larger parking owners with the means to boost spending for maintenance construction that has been deferred.
