WALKING IN GREAT BRITAIN
This report presents information about walking in Great Britain, mainly at the national level. The first part looks at trends in walking, and the characteristics of people who walk. The second part looks at walking to work, for which data are available for local districts. The third part uses London data, and the final part looks at trends in pedestrian casualties and casualty rates. Walking features in virtually all journeys, regardless of the main mode of travel. It is an important travel mode with 29 per cent of all journeys in Great Britain being made mainly by foot, including 80 per cent of those under one mile. However, the National Travel Survey (NTS) shows that the average distance walked per person per year has been steadily dropping. In 1996, a Steering Group was established to encourage the provision of a better environment for walking and to help reverse the decline in journeys and distances that are walked. The Group membership includes representatives of central and local government and others who have an interest in walking. The Steering Group will be publishing a National Walking Strategy proposing objectives and actions needed to encourage walking for single mode journeys and, importantly, as a vital link in journeys involving one or more other modes of travel. The statistics provided in this report are intended to help local authorities, planners, designers, pedestrian groups, academics and others develop walking within their areas of interest and influence.
