A CASE STUDY OF THE MANAGEMENT AND REMEDIATION OF SOIL CONTAMINATED WITH POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYLS

The PCB contaminated soil discussed in the present study arose from a 20ha telecommunications manufacturing facility built in the 1950s. Capacitor manufacture, and retrofilling of capacitors and transformers led to contamination of the soil in a number of small areas on the site. It is believed that subsequent cut and fill construction operations spread the contamination over large areas of the site. In addition to the PCB contamination, there was also evidence of chlorinated solvent contamination of the groundwater which necessitated a separate extensive site investigation and tracer testing programme to assess the potential impact on near-by sensitive receptors.
