DESIGN OF CEMENT CONCRETE OVERLAYS WITH STAGGERED JOINTS

A method for designing cement concrete overlays with staggered joints is presented in this paper. Stresses in both overlaid concrete pavements and old concrete pavements are calculated using three dimentional finite element method, with the consideration of the effects of damage load locations, joint forms and concrete pavements. The interface between unbonded overlays and old concrete pavements is characterized using the three dimensional Goodman model. The calculation results are verified by laboratory experiments. The damage load location of unbonded overlays with staggered joints is found. For an assigned kind of airplane, the stresses in both unbonded overlays and old concrete airport pavements are calculated, and nomo-graph is given.
