MODEL TESTING OF CLOSELY SPACED TUNNELS IN CLAY
This paper describes the use of reduced-scale model testing to study the effect of shield tunnel construction on the structural liners of existing nearby tunnels. The research considered the influence of tunnel proximity and alignment, liner stiffness and soil overconsolidation ratio on the nature of short-term interactions between closely spaced tunnels in clay. Seven sets of carefully controlled tests were performed in two main series: (a) parallel tunnels; and (b) perpendicular tunnels. Two different test tanks were developed and used to produce clay samples of Speswhite kaolin: a plane strain tank for the parallel tunnels; and a cylindrical tank for the perpendicular tunnels. Three model tunnels were installed in each clay sample in order to conduct two separate interaction experiments. The tunnel liners were installed using a model tunnelling machine that was designed to simulate the construction of a full scale shield tunnel. The first tunnel liner to be installed in any test was instrumented. Measurements of interaction effects were then made during and after the installation of new adjacent tunnels. The interaction mechanisms observed in the physical model tests are discussed and interpreted. (A)
