OPTIMA: OPTIMISATION OF POLICIES FOR TRANSPORT INTEGRATION IN METROPOLITAN AREAS: A REVIEW OF THE METHOD APPLIED TO NINE EUROPEAN CITIES

The most appropriate strategy for meeting transport policy objectives in a city will depend on its size, the current built form, topography, transport infrastructure and patterns of use; levels of car ownership, congestion and projected growth in travel; transport policy instruments already in use; and the acceptability of other measures in political and legislative terms. Policy advice cannot therefore be generalised, but must be developed for a range of different city types. This is the approach adopted in a current EU project, OPTIMA, in which nine different cities in five countries are studied in detail, using a common study methodology. The study approach uses each city's transport model, together with a methodology for generating optimal strategies from a given set of instruments for a specified objective function. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 899083.
