EFFECT OF STUDDED TYRES ON JOURNEY TIMES OF VEHICLES

DUBBDAECKS EFFECT PAA FORDONS RESTIDER

The aim was to assess the magnitude of any differences in journey times on rural roads between vehicles with studded or with unstudded tyres under different road conditions. The journey times were calculated for approximately 5700 light vehicles, about 1700 of these being registered on icy road surfaces. The measurements were carried out in the central regions of Sweden and, on the average, the number of vehicles with studded tyres amounted to 60 %. No differences were found for vehicles with studded or unstudded tyres regarding journey times on bare roads. When the carriageway was covered with snow or ice the journey times for both types increased. The vehicles with studded tyres were driven at somewhat higher speeds than those with unstudded tyres when the road was icy. A calculation was made of the total gain in journey times attributable to studded tyres on the national road network during the studded tyre season for the year 1973. The time saving was approximately 1% of the total time consumed by journeys with vehicles with studded tyres. The results also indicate that the speed at which the vehicles with studded tyres are driven on slippery surfaces does not involve a longer braking-to-stop distance than that needed by vehicles with unstudded tyres. /TRRL/
