STATE-OF-THE-ART TUBE VEHICLE SYSTEM
A train utilizing state-of-the art equipment operating in a low pressure (3.5 psia) underground tunnel is analyzed. The tunnel is smaller (13.75 feet in diameter) than conventional subway tunnels (16 to 18 feet in diameter). The tunnel is deeper (200 to 500 feet) than most subways. The additonal depth provides assistance to the propulsion system during acceleration and to the braking system during deceleration. The reduction in tunnel size and cost offsets the additional cost of vacuum pumps of conventional urban systems, while at the same time energy costs are reduced. The system speed is great enough to provide high capacity as a shuttle service utilizing a single tube, which may have application in an airport access link.
