STEP BY STEP PROGRESS TOWARDS MORE ATTRACTIVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT
STEGVIS UTVECKLING MOT ATTRAKTIV KOLLEKTIVTRAFIK
The only way to produce a better traffic solution in larger towns, without introducing undesirable restrictions on cars, is to improve public transport radically. The provision of busways, bus streets or bus lanes is the best way of obtaining a natural distribution between private and public modes, and allows both to function. This policy would reduce traffic companies' operating costs and liberate resources which can be used for other improvements. Introduction of express buses and better routing can considerably reduce travelling time. Improvements to buses, stops, traffic information and traffic management are also very effective measures. An increase in average bus speed is also very important since it improves service and cuts running costs. Step-by-step improvement of bus services gives the best results; reference is made to stevenage. There is a description of an experimental installation comprising buses fitted with an automatic control system which takes over when the bus approaches a stop. These incorporate platforms so that there is no difference in level. /TRRL/
