When a sheet pile driven into clay is extracted, a layer of clay usually adheres to this, and the cavity left is thus much larger than the volume of the pile. When this cavity is filled, settlement of the adjacent soil surface can take place. Especially in cases where pipes are pushed from one sheetpiled manhole pit to the next and the piling is withdrawn after the manhole has been built, there is such settlement of the manhole due to removal of soil on the piles that fracture of the pipe at its junction with the manhole occurs. Adhesion of the soil can be reduced by electroosmosis. By making the sheet pile the cathode and A steel section 3-4 M away the anode, water and gas accumulate at the sheet pile, and adhesion of clay is greatly reduced. The method can also be used for temporary steel casings for bored piles. Equipment required is a welding set capable of supplying 200-250 a. The charge intensity for acceptable electroosmotic lubrication is 15-30 ah/m2 of piling surface exposed to the clay. /TRRL
