BATTERY ELECTRIC BUS PROJECT. FINAL REPORT
This report covers the operation of two experimental electric buses from 13/3/72 to 5/10/74 with 12 operators in 14 towns and cities. Range and energy consumption are directly related to vehicle construction and usage and this information is analysed in detail. The operating cost of the vehicles is not dealt with as they are only experimental, though an outline exercise to see what is required to make a small electric bus economically comparable to a conventional vehicle is undertaken. The report does not set out to be a precisely argued case for or against the small electric bus. The data gathered during the project is set out. A set of conclusions are listed at the end of the report some of which are: the buses, using existing conventional technology were able to meet the range demands of 9 of the 14 routes on which they were used, energy consumption of the DOI bus was notably higher than that of a conventional vehicle in the one case where a direct comparison was reasonable. /TRRL/
