ROAD EXPERIMENTS TO COMPARE THE PERFORMANCE OF PAVING BITUMENS IN RESEALS. VICTORIA 1973-1974
Two experimental reseal trials were laid in Victoria in 1973 and 1974 with the first objective of determining whether '85/100 pen' grade bitumens with a 'Vispen index' lower than 40000 (the minimum of the current specifications) would give poor initial stone retention when the sealing was done during a period of hot weather. A bitumen with a 'Vispen index' as low as 28000 gave satisfactory initial stone retention in hot weather and all the experimental sections are still in good condition. Since the five bitumens used in the trials have different deformation and flow characteristics and different susceptibilities to hardening by oxidation, the trials can now be regarded as experiments to determine how these properties are related to long term service performance in reseals. This report gives details on the laying trials, results of laboratory tests on the bitumens and the performance of the road sections to date. It is intended to follow the hardening of the bitumens in the seals by sampling them periodically. (A) /TRRL/
