The new Models GM-6 and GM-10 electric locomotives designed for heavy-duty freight service are reviewed in this paper. These are provided with the most modern thyristor contol and include a number of new and novel features. In terms of tractive effort capabilities and wide range of horsepower capabilities horsepower capabilites, the GM-10 locomotive is believed to be the most powerful locomotive ever built in the world. At a time when electrification projects are being undertaken in many countries of the world, it is timely to consider some of the interesting factors affecting electrificaton of U.S. railroads which are discussed in this paper.
