INFLUENCE OF MIX-DESIGN PARAMETERS ON THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE
INFLUENCE DES PARAMETRES DE FORMULATION SUR LE COMPORTEMENT A LA FATIGUE D'UN ENROBE BITUMINEUX
In an effort to study the influence of the composition of a base-course bituminous mixture (gravel-bitumen) on its complex modulus and fatigue behavior, tests were conducted on 12 specimens which were simultaneously subjected to fatigue testing at a controlled deformation amplitude. A multiple bending fatigue machine was used and the following features were studied: angularity, fines content, bitumen content, mineralogical nature, and voids content. For the first four parameters, the influence was determined at both constant voids content and constant compacting energy. An attempt was also made to determine the optimum compositions from the viewpoint of the fatigue resistance of a road structure in gravel-bitumen. For a constant compacting energy, the best compositions have a completely crushed gravel-bitumen with 4.5% bitumen or a completely rolled gravel-bitumen with 3.5% bitumen.
