TRAFFIC WORK DURING DIFFERENT ROAD CONDITIONS DURING WINTER MONTHS OF 1973

Investigations have shown that the use of studded tires leads to better road holding only on surfaces of ice and packed snow. An investigation was therefore made to estimate the frequency of different road conditions in different parts of Sweden. About 50,000 observations were made in 7 months and the distribution of vehicle mileage in different road conditions was estimated. Observations in north, central and southern Sweden are presented. Road users were found to adjust their use of studded tires to prevailing road conditions in different regions and during different months. Data related to road conditions on paved roads treated and not treated with de-icing salt were also compared. The accident rate was found to be 3-4 times higher in ice or snow conditions than in bare ground conditions.
