A SUMMARY REPORT OF DRIVER ATTITUDES TOWARD RESTRAINTS FOR GREATER SAFETY IN THE OPERATION OF AN AUTOMOBILE

A study was made of the level of knowledge and information about automobile safety restraints, current attitudes toward these safety restraints, and reactions to action which might be taken related to: mandatory seat belt usage law, mandatory air bags in new cars, and non-payment of auto insurance if seat belts are not fastened at time of accident. Drivers were found to indicate a concern about the extent of unsafe driving, but also blamed other drivers for accidents despite admission to taking risks themselves. They therefore seek solutions in the enforcement of existing laws. Drivers were aware of the injury reducing features of safety belts and other measures and over a third of drivers report using the seat belts always or most of the time. Findings are also summarized regarding the personal benefits and risks ascribed by drivers to seat belts and air bags.
