BEARING CAPACITY STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF SOFT ORGANIC SULPHIDE SOILS
In this study of organic sulphide soils in Northern Sweden and Finland, large-scale plate-load tests were used to investigate the shear strength which the soil can mobilize in the field, and screw-plate tests were used to determine the shear strength under conditions which are similar to those below a foundation or embankment. Routine tests were used to study the effect of loading rate, time to failure and anisotropy. The results showed that the undrained shear strength from in-situ large-scale tests was lower than the corrected undrained shear strength from the routine tests. A reduction of the shear strength from the routine tests is also required when the liquid limit as determined from fall-cone tests is lower than 80. It was found that the difference between field and laboratory tests is partly caused by a difference in the time to failure and by strength anisotropy. The pressure-settlement-time relationship for the soil in-situ can be calculated by the proposed method to evaluate the results from screw-plate tests.
