LARGE FLAT PLATE HYDROFOIL EXPERIMENTS AT LOW FROUDE NUMBERS

Results of towing tank experiments are presented for the lift and drag on an aspect ratio 4, rectangular planform, flat plate, 5.21 percent thick hydrofoil operated near the free surface of water at low Froude numbers in the Reynolds number range 710,000 to 5,200,000. The data presented here include three foil submergences f/c=0.25, 1, and 2 with angles of attack ranging from 0 to 8 degrees. These unique data are intended to fill an important gap in our experimental knowledge of near-surface, low speed hydrofoil performance. (There is special emphasis on chord Froude numbers at and near F sub c=1, the nominal range of these tests being 0.5 less F sub c less 3.5.) This low speed range has only recently atracted attention because of the large sizes of projected hydrofoil lift support systems. The results of these tests indicate that there are significant reductions in lift accompanied by increases in drag for operation at shallow and moderate submergence in the chord Froude number range of 0.75 less F sub c less 1.5.
