A REPORT ON THE DESIGN AND THE CONSTRUCTION METHODS ON THE WEARING SURFACES FOR AN ORTHOTROPIC PLATE BRIDGE DECK
The laying of asphaltic concrete wearing surfaces on steel bridge decks has been the concern of many Engineers. From various reports, the difficulties in obtaining a satisfactory performance lies in the heterogeneous properties of the two materials involved. Consequently the design life span of these wearing surfaces varies. To date all such wearing surfaces are designed to past experience. In particular references are made on the wearability as well as construction method. In the design and construction of the Mission Orthotropic Bridge wearing surface, the British Columbia Department of Highways drew its experience from the Port Mann Bridge which is basically of the same design and construction.
