RESEARCH PLAN FOR ACHIEVING REDUCED AUTOMOTIVE ENERGY CONSUMPTION

This report presents a research program plan aimed at achieving improved fuel economy for internal combustion engines and associated powertrain components as used in passenger cars, trucks, and buses. The types of engines considered include reciprocating and rotary spark ignition gasoline engines, stratified charge variants, and diesel engines. Also included is an assessment of the impact of the potential use of non-petroleum-based alternative fuels on modified or improved internal combustion engines and the research needed to support such future implementation. The research program plan was formulated after an evaluation of internal combustion engine and powertrain alternatives which offer potential for significant reductions in fuel consumption, and a survey of current research in government, universities, and industry (both foreign and domestic). The plan defines needed work in the areas of combustion research, materials research, friction reduction, alternative fuels, engine controls, and diagnostic instrumentation research. Emphasis was placed on identification of near-term (to 1985) benefits. A summary of recent and ongoing research programs in the field is also included.
