FIELD EVALUATION OF SAND DRAIN CONSTRUCTION
This project consists of an investigation of consolidation and stability of an embankment on soft ground. The horizontal coefficient of consolidation was measured by consolidation tests with radial drainage and by field permeability tests. The consolidation rate predicted on the basis of the results of these tests are in agreement with the consolidation rate indicated by measured porepressures. The shear strength of the subsoil was investigated by means of unconfined compression tests, triaxial tests and simple shear tests. The gain in strength due to consolidation was determined and a method for the evaluation of the strength during construction was developed. The horizontal displacements were calculated using the results of creep tests. The calculated displacements are much larger than the measured displacements.
