ROAD EXPERIMENTS TO COMPARE THE PERFORMANCE OF PAVING BITUMENS IN SERVICE

The Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) has developed a laboratory durability test procedure which measures the resistance of paving bitumens to hardening by oxidation during handling and service. To confirm the utility of this test procedure, road experiments have been laid with viscosity graded bitumens with a range of resistance to hardening as measured by the test. The rate of hardening and relative performance of these bitumens in both an initial seal surfacing and a dense hot mix surfacing will be monitored over a period of up to fifteen years. The seven bitumens used in the road experiments have differences in rheological behiviour. These differences are likely to have some effect on relative performance in service so they have been evaluated in detail. This report gives the properties (including durability test results) of the binders used and details of the laying of the two road experiments. A paving tar was included in the dense hot mix surfacing experiment for performance comparison with the bitumens.
