INVESTIGATIONS AT BANKSTOWN, N.S.W.

In an effort to evaluate the suitability of a static type cone penetrometer for measuring subgrade and pavement California Bearing Ratio (CBR) strength, an examination was made of the correlation between thrust readings on the cone with in situ CBR readings carried out by the standard method (Austrailian). A secondary study was also made of the correlation between readings from a standard type of dynamic cone, as used by the Country Roads Board, Victoria and readings from the standard in situ CBR method. The static cone penetrometer consisted of a spindle, to which can be attached cones of cross-sectional areas of 1/2, 1 or 2 equare inches, which can be forced by a hydraulic ram acting on the spindle through the base and/or subgrade layers of the road. The procedure is detailed and the study results are presented. The main function of the well designed static cone penetrometer is in conjunction with Benkelman Beam deflection measurements for assisting with decisions on the reconstruction requirements for urban roads with heavy traffic. The equipment will be mainly used for determining subgrade strengths up to a value of CBR of 20 percent. An advantage of the equipment is that it can penetrate fairly strong asphaltic concrete and crushed rock pavements.
