THE MARKET FOR MEDIUM-SIZED TANKERS (70,000-175,000 DWR)

At the end of 1975, medium-sized tanker tonnage, totalling 66 million DWT, represented 23% of the world tanker fleet, while the orderbook of 30 million DWT, (equivalent to 45% of the current fleet) accounted for 28% of the total world tanker tonnage on order. Considering the large amount of medium-sized tonnage both in existence and on order, very little information on the characteristics of the fleet, its employment and trading prospects has been available until now, and it is this gap in tanker market data which the study aims to fill. In SECTION 1, the study examines the fleet in detail by size, age, ownership, flag, dimension and propulsion, and compares it in terms of importance and characteristics with the rest of the tanker fleet. It also considers the contribution that the medium-sized combined carrier fleet makes to total medium-sized oil carrying capacity. In section 2 the current employment of medium sized tankers is examined. SECTION 3 comprises an analysis of future demand and supply of medium-sized tankers. Estimates of supply are made by considering such factors as possible rates of scrapping, newbuildings, the imposition of segregated ballast regulations and the proportion of combined carriers likely to be involved in oil trades.
