ROADS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The author gives an account of recent developments in the design of new roads and adjoining areas. A description is given of the environmental issues involved in carrying out the road programme, the principles of route selection, the design of motorways and bridges, the steps taken to fit them into the landscape and to minimize any adverse effects upon amenities in town and country, and the services available to road users. It is pointed out that many new roads may bring a positive improvement to the quality of the environment and emphasis is placed on planting. A series of photographs illustrate the topics covered. /TRRL/
