A STUDY OF THE RECLAMATION AND REUSE OF WASTE TYRES, COMMISSIONED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRY

In August 1974, RAPRA was commissioned by the Department of Industry to undertake a study of waste tyre reclamation and re-use. The scope of the study was to cover: (a) the present and future size and pattern of worn tyre arisings. This was to be expressed not only in numbers and weights of tyres but also in terms of types and amounts of materials involved. In particular, the study was to identify the size and pattern of arisings of worn tyres which are not reclaimed or re-used in any way and which constitute the heart of the waste tyre reclamation problem; (b) reclamation processes and resultant re-use products. The application of existing technical knowledge and how it can be encouraged. Developments in retreading. Prospects, particularly in major market outlets, for processes and products including for reclaim and rubber crumb. Pyrolysis and incineration, including an economic assessment of recyclable materials and energy production. Survey of prospects for non-rubber constituents including textiles, metals, and chemicals; (C) a survey of major markets to complement the market information in (b). The findings of the study are presented and discussed. /TRRL/
