LEARNER DRIVERS AND THE DRIVING BOOKS THEY READ

A questionnaire has been used to find out whether people who are learning to drive read books about driving. A total of 773 questionnaires were given out to car and van drivers who had just taken a driving test, and 701 were completed and returned. Less than half the respondents had read books about driving. The book read most by respondents was the Doe Book "Driving"1. Older learner drivers were more likely to read books on driving and women were more likely to read such books than men. No difference was found between the doe driving test pass rates of the readers and non-readers. The readers had significantly more hours of driving instruction and practice than non-readers before taking the driving tests. (a) /TRRL/
