DESIGN OF BUBBLING DEICING FACILITY: KINGSTON TO WOLFE ISLAND
The deicing facility designed to keep the ferry route between Kingston Harbour and Wolfe Island free of ice, consists of a system of pipes to be located on the river bottom along the ferry route. Air is introduced into the water through nozzles in the pipes to raise the warmer water from the bottom of the river to the surface to prevent freezing. The deicing facility was actually designed to allow a small amount of ice to form on the surface so that the heat transfer to the surrounding air is minimized and yet the ferry will have no difficulty in breaking through the thin ice. This report describes the analysis, testing and design work carried out on the deicing facility.
