THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NOISE-REDUCED DUMPER
This report records that by fitting more efficient exhaust and inlet silencers and enclosing the engine, the noise from a 2300 kg dumper powered by a 13.4 kw two-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine has been reduced by 10 db(a) - representing a halving of the subjective loudness of the standard dumper. Noise levels with the engine at maximum speed have been reduced to: (I) 85db(a) at the driver's ears, (II) 75db(a) at 7 M from the vehicle when stationary and (III) 82db(a) in the drive-by test used internationally for cars and lorries. With such a machine the driver does not need ear protectors and it is easier to operate within the noise limits set by local authorities. In addition, the plant manufacturer should not encounter any barriers to export on account of noise. The acoustic treatment will add about 7 per cent to the cost of a standard dumper. Similar treatment can be applied to many other types of construction plant. /TRRL/
