AUTOMATIC TESTING

The automation of vehicle testing by chassis dynamometers largely originated as a result of the need for mileage accumulation for emission testing. However, techniques have now been developed which can be usefully deployed for more universal application where exact repeatability of programmed speed and load is an important consideration. The first requirement, if this is to be satisfactorily achieved, is a chassis dynamometer of known accuracy, reliability, and repeatability. Early machines had many faults, were of dubious accuracy and were often liable to cause damage to the tyres of the vehicle on test. This paper describes first of all how reliable accurate dynamometers were developed and how automated testing can be applied for use in the following areas: mileage accumulation for exhaust emission certification; vehicle efficiency and fuel consumption tests; road simulation tests for production quality assurance; and production testing of diesel engines. In addition, equipment is described which permits the simulation of any given set of vehicle characteristics such as road load, windage, axle ratio and wheel diameter to an engine and gearbox assembly. This can be used to test emission levels, evaluate performance and develop engine systems, without the use of a completed vehicle. It is also an ideal production tool for monitoring quality and performance before issuing engines to the vehicle assembly area.(a) /TRRL/
