WEAK (LEAN) MIXTURE RUNNING OF THE SPARK IGNITION ENGINE
The report summarises work to increase the efficiency of the weak mixture running of engines by increasing the charge turbulence in the combustion chamber at the optimum time. Other methods investigated include the introduction of a high flame speed fuel such as hydrogen, and increasing the spark gap with multiple ignition. Turbulence has been increased by intake generated methods, the use of squish plates of variable configurations, and by using stratified charge. Various shapes of vortex generators placed as close as possible to the inlet valve are shown to be a successful method of increasing turbulence. Graphs are plotted of flame travel time against air/fuel ratio with and without vortex generation. Similar curves show the effect of up to 20 per cent squish. The effect upon thermal efficiency of injecting hydrogen into the inlet manifold is examined, and results are given to show the effect of spark gap width and the use of up to four points of ignition. /TRRl/
