THE STATIC AND FATIGUE PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE BEAMS WITH HIGH STRENGTH DEFORMED BARS
An investigation sponsored by the Construction Industry Research and Information Association into the influence of the type of deformed bar used as reinforcement on the performance of concrete beams under static and fatigue loading is described. The level of cracking and of deflection under both static and fatigue loading is shown to be determined primarily by the magnitude of the steel stress and was little affected by the degree of surface deformation on the bar. Fatigue loading resulted in some increase in cracking and deflection and led ultimately to failure by brittle fracture of the reinforcing bars. The fatigue life of the beams varied considerably over the range of bar types tested and seemed to depend on the severity of the notching effect introduced by the deformations. In practice the risk of failure under conditions of fatigue loading would appear to be remote for the bars of British manufacture. /TRRL/
