PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS IN LONDON

The policy of the Greater London Council in resolving the conflict between pedestrians and cyclists and the other forms of road traffic is outlined. The first requirement is to reduce the volume of traffic and the second requirement is segregation, and, where this is not possible, protection. Schemes for pedestrianization, partially or wholly, in several areas of London are being considered. In other areas, protective measures, such as guard rails and zebra crossings are installed. Greater London has a road safety organisation which identifies 'black spots' and analyses the details of accidents. Special provision for cyclists can be made in redevelopment schemes, and other possible routes for cyclsts are being examined. /TRRL/
