PORT APPROACH DESIGN - A SURVEY OF SHIP BEHAVIOUR STUDIES, VOLUMES 1 AND 2

This report is in two volumes. Volume I is aimed at the port designer, and is divided into two parts, of which Part I explains and identifies the factors affecting the behaviour of ships in confined waters, quantifies the influencing parameters where known and identifies priority areas for future research. Part II is a reprint of a report carried out for the Tees and Hartlepool Port Authority which examines the relationship between vessel sizes and port approach features. This is included to demonstrate how the information contained in Part I can be interpreted and applied in a specific port context. Volume II is aimed at the researcher and is divided into two parts. Part III relates in more technical detail the results of the survey of ship behaviour studies, and discusses the various methods of research by which results have been obtained. Part IV lists the 326 studies covered by this survey, and gives a brief description and summary of each.
