USE OF MATHEMATICAL MODELS TO SOLVE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS
ANVAENDNING AV MATEMATISKA MODELLER FOER ATT LOESA TRANSPORTPROBLEM
The aim of this study was to review the use of mathematical models in Swedish companies with transportation activities, to present the models developed so far, both in theory and practice, and by case-studies illustrate the use of mathematical models in great practical problems. The results show that mathematical models are not used to a very large extent to make transportation more efficient in Swedish companies. This could be due to a lack of knowledge of the existence and use of these models and the fact that the transportation problems are too complex to be transformed to mathematical formulae. The author claims that further research should deal with economical models to determine the demand and substitution between different modes of transportation and methods for design of effective route transports. /TRRL/
