REINFORCEMENT OF CONCRETE WITH SISAL AND OTHER VEGETABLE FIBRES
An investigation has been made into the feasibility of reinforcing concrete with vegetable fibres, in order to collate experience gained so far, to obtain information on cultivation requirements, production volumes and technical properties, and to perform simple tests on sisal fibres and on concrete beams reinforced with randomly oriented sisal fibres, as well as to test methods of applying the reinforcement. Although sisal has a lower elastic modulus than steel, its use in developing countries is justifiable, but more studies are needed before sisal fibres can be used on a major scale. It should be possible to improve bond. Tests on longitudinally aligned fibres, in the form of a rope or mesh etc, would be of interest. In view of the energy crisis and economic difficulties, in particular in developing countries, vegetable fibres can prove to be a viable alternative to steel reinforcement. /TRRL/
