TRAFFIC COURT SCHOOL COUNTERMEASURE
This demonstration project was conducted for the specific purpose of testing the effectiveness of educational programs for traffic violators as an alternative adjudication process. Three types of driver re-education programs for traffic violators were evaluated with respect to subsequent driving performance. They were: (1) Trigger Response Group Participation (TRGP) course for drivers under 27 years of age, study group #1 (SGI); (2) Defensive Driving Course (DDC) for those under 27 years of age, study group #2 (SGII); (3) Defensive Driving Course (DDC) for all ages, study group #3 (SGIII). Data measures were collected on a control group (all ages) which did not participate in any traffic re-education program. Randomly designated individuals, whom selected traffic judges felt would benefit from a driver re6 0education program, were assigned to the program if found guilty of a traffic violation. Driving records of participating subjects were examined at six and twelve months following completion of the course. While the TRGP program did show a significant reduction in accidents at the twelve month level, and would be recommended over no program at all, the DDC program involving all age students demonstrated superior accident and citation reduction qualities and would be most strongly recommended for implementation as traffic re-education programs. The driver most likely to be influenced by traffic safety school was one who had fewer offenses, was older, and had more formal education. /MSA/
