AN ANALYSIS OF DRINKER DIAGNOSIS AND REFERRAL. NO: ASAP ANALYTIC STUDY NO. 5. ANNUAL REPORT

The New Orleans ASAP probation unit assigns persons convicted of DWI to one of three drinker types based upon the results of a pre-sentence investigation. A multiple discriminate analysis of various descriptive variables and test results shows that probation officers are consistent in their classification of drinker types. Nearly 75% of the cases classified by discriminate analysis fell into their original groups. Of all of the variables available to the probation officer, three variables (prior DWI arrests, BAC at arrest, and the University of Michigan Questionnaire score) accounts for 94% of the discriminating ability of the analysis. This suggests a possible streamlining of pre-sentence investigation procedures with a corresponding savings in time, money, and manpower utilization. No experimental design which would allow for treatment/non-treatment comparisons was acceptable to the courts. Therefore, recidivism rates were the only measure of rehabilitation/re- education success. Recividism is directly proportional to drinker status and the degree of the client's drinking problem at the time of entry into rehabilitation is the best predictor of recividism.
