ACQUISITION, CALIBRATION AND APPLICATION OF A PAVEMENT SKID RESISTANCE TESTER. PHASE I. SPECIFICATIONS AND ACQUISITION
This report of a research project to study skid characteristics covers the first phase, studying various testing units, to determine specification and to acquire or construct a skid trailer. Skid correlation studies from Tappahannock, VA and Florida, and a summary of pavement friction testers used by 28 states were compared and a cost benefit analysis made, which led to the conclusion that the Arkansas Highway Department shouldn't construct the skid tester. It was decided that the best procedure was to requisition the tow truck, secure locally a water tank and body for the tow truck and purchase a commercial model skid- testing trailer and necessary recording and control equipment, with provisions for the installation and hook-up of all components by the successful bidder. Specifications and recommendations for the tow truck, water tank and body, and trailer were developed, and some necessary modifications made.
