This Safety Implications Panel Report is Number Two (2) of a group of seven (7) prepared by special panels of the Task Force established under the joint chairmanship of DOT and EPA to conduct a study of the practicability of a fuel economy improvement standard of 20% for new motor vehicles produced in the 1980 time frame. This panel report contains four individual analyses related to the safety impact of increased small car usage and automobile weight reductions to improve fuel economy: fuel economy as a function of weight, performance, and driving schedule; traffic control for safety and fuel economy; weight versus safety; effects of speed limits on fuel economy and safety. /Author/
