PRELIMINARY ENGINEERING REPORT ON POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS TO RAILROAD PASSENGER SERVICE BETWEEN NEW YORK AND BOSTON

The purpose of this report is to set forth the changes and additions which might be made in order to reduce the travel time between New York and Boston to 2-1/2 hours, 2-3/4 hours, or 3 hours. In the study of 3-hour travel time top speeds of both 125 mph and 150 mph are considered. In studies of 2-3/4 hour travel time two possiblilities are considered: first that the improvements to the right-of-way necessary to reduce the travel time to 2-3/4 hours might be made between New Haven and Providence where the costs are relatively modest, and, second, that these improvements might be made between New York and New Haven where the costs are considerably higher.
