This Nordic report considers the question of safety of children in cars, primarily from medical and practical points of view. Children are divided into different groups according to their bodily development requirements and the respective best available protection: infant, placed in a cradle in the rear; child seat, rearward facing systems; rear seat; and seat belt ages. From a protectional point of view, children cannot be considered as minature adults. The rear of the car is the safest place for the child. One consideration is a proposal that traffic safety authorities be legally authorized to prohibit the use of nonapproved protective devices. One guideline is a recommendation to try making child seats and seat belts suitable for as many children as possible. /MW/
