INTERCITY PASSENGER TRANSPORT IN CANADA: ANALYSIS OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF ALTERNATIVE PRICING AND NETWORK STRATEGIES
The effects of implementing various passenger transportation strategies on intercity travel are discussed. Passenger shift predictions are examined which relate to the following variables. Reduced train service; increased speed of trains; reduced auto speeds to a maximum of 55 mph; increased short distance air fares and decreased long distance air fares; and, increased gasoline prices. A combination of fare pricing strategies and eleven network strategies yielded forty-four alternatives which were analyzed on a computer. Predictions related to rail, air, bus and auto transportation are detailed.
