OPTIMUM ALLOCATION OF TRANSPORTATION TERMINALS IN URBAN AREAS

The report indicates a method of determining the location of a number of transportation terminals in an urban area in such a way that they were most accessible, and thus had the greatest utility from a system customer's point of view. By equating demand distribution with population distribution, and making some straightforward assumptions about travel velocity and path, a simple circular model was constructed. Subsequent theoretical and numerical analyses using a computer program which was developed from the model suggested several important results. There seems good reason to believe that the model, which is based on very modest assumptions and requires vastly less effort to parametrize than the network approach, will generate solutions which compare favorably with more complex models.
