DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF THE MARINE RADAR INTERROGATOR TRANSPONDER AS A COASTAL NAVIGATION AID
Because of recent interest in the development of secondary radar systems for coastal navigation, the capabilities and limitations of the Marine Radar Interrogator Transponder (MRIT) are investigated to determine suitability for such service. MARAD's development and evaluation program for the MRIT is discussed, and several special navigation techniques are explored. The MRIT is considered the preferred secondary radar system because of its wide ranging applicability to collision avoidance, maritime surveillance, as well as coastal navigation.
