SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS: A REVIEW OF RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND PRACTICE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
A study of accident statistics has indicated that 10% of all road accidents in the United Kingdom are caused by the reduction in skidding resistance and the impaired visibility which occur when roads are wet. The skidding resistance of wet road surfaces has been studied for many years and methods of measurement have been developed and correlated with accident statistics. Research employing these test methods has indicated that a concrete pavement will maintain a high level of low-speed skidding resistance if the fine aggregate is substantially harder than the cement paste matrix. Adequate resistance to high-speed skidding demands a surface with a deep texture and the provision of transverse grooves has been shown to be very effective. Machines to groove both plastic concrete and worn pavements have been developed. Both machines have been used on airfields as well as roads.
